This book reconceptualizes migration studies in India by emphasizing on the beneficial effects of migration in the form of acquired knowledge, confidence and skills. It interrogates the idea of citizenship by exploring the contested relationship between the state and internal migrants in the country. The volume brings out various facets of internal migration such as the role of gender, ethnicity, caste, electoral participation of the internal migrants, livelihood diversification, struggle for settlement and politics of displacement. Migration has been one of the most debated topics in the 21st century, and as per the Census of India 2011 and the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) 2007-08, three out of ten Indians may be classified as internal migrants who have moved across state boundaries.
